Art for Hope considers education to be a transformative and empowering tool. Our education program is dedicated to overcoming educational barriers faced by refugees in Dzaleka and surrounding areas. Recognizing the critical lack of access to quality education and the financial constraints that hinder families from enrolling their children in formal schooling, we provide comprehensive and alternative educational solutions. Our initiatives include foundational literacy and vocational training, home schooling support, and educational enrichment for both children and adults. We also offer mindfulness education to students and counseling services to foster emotional and academic growth. Through these programs, Art for Hope aims to bridge educational gaps, empower individuals, and promote long-term development and self-sufficiency.

Dzaleka Refugee Camp, initially designed to accommodate 10,000 individuals, now houses over 55,000 people. This overcrowding has led to significant strain on resources, particularly in the education sector. With approximately 58% of the population being children, access to formal schooling remains a critical issue. Limited space in UN or free-of-charge schools, coupled with financial constraints among parents and guardians, has resulted in only 30% of children being able to attend school regularly.
In response to these challenges, we have established a Homeschooling and Education Enrichment Program as a swift and effective measure to address the immediate educational needs of refugee children. Rather than waiting for the construction of new schools, which can be both time-consuming and costly, our program provides a flexible and accessible alternative.

Program Overview

Duration: The program follows the standard academic calendar, spanning nine months of intensive study.
Curriculum: Our curriculum is tailored to meet the diverse educational needs of refugee children, focusing on foundational subjects such as mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies.
Qualified Instructors: Experienced educators, volunteers, and community members serve as instructors, ensuring each child receives personalized attention and support.
Holistic Approach: In addition to academic subjects, our program emphasizes holistic development, incorporating arts, physical health activities, and mental wellness initiatives.
Community Engagement: We actively involve parents, guardians, and community leaders in the educational process, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment within the refugee community.

English Language Empowerment Initiative

​We are proud to offer English language classes specifically designed to meet the unique needs of refugees in the Dzaleka Camp. Recognizing the vital role that language proficiency plays in facilitating integration, communication, and access to opportunities, our program aims to empower refugees by equipping them with essential English language skills.

Language barriers pose significant obstacles in Dzaleka and make camp life more challenging for integration and self-sufficiency. Limited proficiency in English, the global language, and the Malawian official language of communication impedes access to education and opportunities for refugees to strive. Moreover, the diverse linguistic backgrounds of refugees present additional challenges in fostering cohesion and community engagement.
In response to these challenges, we have developed a comprehensive English language curriculum tailored to the specific needs and abilities of refugee learners. Our program adopts a communicative and interactive approach, focusing on practical language skills that are essential for everyday life and future success.
Our program highlights a carefully crafted curriculum to address refugee students' unique linguistic backgrounds and learning needs, providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Qualified Instructors: Experienced English language instructors, many of whom are volunteers from within the refugee community, deliver engaging and interactive lessons that prioritize student participation and empowerment.
Our students learn everything from basic vocabulary and grammar to conversational fluency and workplace communication. Our program emphasizes the acquisition of practical language skills that enable refugees to navigate real-world situations with confidence.

In addition to language proficiency, our program promotes cultural competence and cross-cultural understanding, fostering empathy, respect, and solidarity among refugee learners, and we actively promote opportunities for community engagement and interaction, facilitating connections between refugees and the broader community to promote integration and social cohesion.
